The Tutors at College were brilliant and have really helped me to grow in confidence

Kelly achieved an outstanding Grade 8 in her GCSE English to help her in her dream of becoming a midwife

Mother-of-three Kelly knew she needed an English qualification to ensure she could make progress towards her vocation, after working in childcare and sales after leaving school 20 years ago with a grade D in English alongside her other subjects.

She is now studying hard to gain the additional qualifications which will open up university-level study for her, with the support of Burnley College Tutors and careers advisors.

BRINGING LEARNING TO LIFE

English for Adult Learners comes to life in many different ways at Burnley College: through writing or analysis of texts, or even healthy real-world debates and students’ own presentations. Texts in class are varied and relevant to current world issues, helping students to expand their cultural, political and social knowledge and broaden their minds. The many different topics studied – from 19th Century texts to Creative Writing – are an excellent way to ease Adult learners back into education, allowing them to use their own real-life experience to succeed in the classroom!

TRAINER

Jack Kilbride

GCSE English and Functional Skills

Jack has been teaching GCSE English and Functional Skills at Burnley College for five years , after graduating with a BA Hons degree in English from Cumbria University and studying for a postgraduate teaching qualification.

He’s passionate about his subject – and helping Adult Learners achieve their full potential – saying that English helps us to understand the world in different ways and allows us to get lost in worlds and experiences that would otherwise be unavailable to us.
