“So much more than a Tutor…” – Students from Burnley College share their favourite memories of just one of their exceptional Tutors.

A £110 million high-tech Campus filled with the latest industry-standard equipment – that’s just one of the things which makes Burnley College Sixth Form Centre the Number 1 College in England* – delivering record-breaking results for its students.

One of the most important aspects of Burnley College’s reputation as a centre of success, a launchpad for the leaders of tomorrow, is our tutors.

Passionate about their subject, industry-experienced, driven to get the best results for every single student – our tutors are the experts in individualised support – ensuring everyone who chose the College instantly feels like a member of the Burnley College Family.

At our Awards for Excellence 2022 ceremony, where we celebrate the very best of achievement and success, we spoke to three students who all had very special memories of one of their tutors.

Joshua Fireman, 18, is a former Calder Learning Trust pupil from Hebden Bridge and is reading Geography at Newcastle University. Joshua is a member of the Elite Athlete Programme at Burnley College as a footballer and says his experience with his tutors has been exceptional:

“Firstly the facilities are amazing. It’s so important to be able to train using the same equipment and techniques that professionals in the world of sport use. What Burnley College has too which no one else has is their tutors.

“They’re here for so much more than just sharing their expertise – they really care about you. I’m not just saying that. They make you genuinely feel like a part of the Burnley College Family.

“Every tutor and trainer has been amazing – but one who stood out to me for his passion to see us succeed was Jahed Ali.”

“Me too,” adds Tilly Vasic. “That’s not to say he went easy on us.”

Tilly, 18, is a former Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar pupil, and is reading Geography at the University of Sheffield after acing her A Levels here at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre. She was an Elite Athlete at the College continues to see great success nationally rock climbing with GB Climbing.

“Let’s just say Jahed is strict. Strict but structured!

“The deadlines were always tough and he expects the maximum effort from you at all times – but that’s exactly what you need when you’re aiming to compete on an international level. You need someone to push you in sport – to show you can go beyond the limits you thought you had.”

“That’s just one side of his personality though,” says Ella Roberts.

Ella Roberts, 18, from Burnley is a former pupil at Shuttleworth College. She too was an Elite Athlete in Track and Field, and says Jahed helped her truly excel:

“He expects you to perform at your highest level all the time but is truly caring and is always there to support you so you can achieve your very best. He’s such a nice man too.”

“The level of support you get from Tutors at Burnley College is just incredible,” says Joshua continues.

“It’s been an amazing time for me here,”

“I’ve seen my career and competitive skills grow but also I’ve grown personally. I was probably quite shy when I first started, but Jahed and Burnley College have given me the confidence to go out into the world and succeed at what I love. That’s been so important to me.”
