New year – New York! Construction students at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre head to the USA

From Burnley to the Big Apple – there are big plans for Construction students at Burnley College as they head over the Atlantic to study the surprising history of the city’s architecture.

It follows an amazingly successful trip to Copenhagen this year where 13 Students from BTEC Level 3 Construction and the Built Environment enjoyed a trip to discover new architecture.

The trip, which was supported by the Student Services Enrichment Fund included visits to the Dansk Arkitektur Center, Maritime Museum, an architectural walking tour, cycling tour and boat trip.

The course is the perfect route to careers such as Architecture and Quantity Surveying.

New York’s architecture is iconic and spans all the way back to the 18th century.

David Lord, Head of Construction at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre says there’s a surprising link between the Empire State Building and East Lancashire:

“Amazingly you don’t have to dig down too far and you find Accrington bricks.
“It’s incredible to learn the foundations of one of the most famous buildings in the world came from just down the road here at Burnley College.”

David Lord

Head of Construction

“The stories of how quickly New York was built are fascinating. For example with simple spades and a huge workforce the entire foundations for the Empire State Building were dug out in 24 hours – something unimaginable now.”

Sol Whittaker, Construction Curriculum Manager says these visits really help to bring to life the subject:

“To be able to get up close to such iconic buildings and see in three-dimensions these designs brought to life – from the plans to the pavement.
“What helps really cement these experiences in place is you also get to enjoy the rich culture of the cities and learn about the history which allowed these constructions to be dreamed of, designed and built.”

Sol Whittaker

Construction Curriculum Manager

“The memories of the Copenhagen trip will stay with the students and me for years to come – and the New York trip will do exactly the same.”

The trip will be open to all Students studying Level 3 Construction courses or a T Level in Construction.

Are you an architect in waiting? Have you always dreamed of creating iconic buildings which will last for centuries? Would you like access to cutting-edge equipment, expert Tutors with industry knowledge? And all on a friendly, secure and vibrant Campus in the heart of Burnley?
