Helping make Burnley cleaner and greener – Burnley College Sixth Form Centre Students plant trees and pick litter as part of Lancashire-wide project
A group of Advanced Level Uniformed Service Students have planted more than 900 trees and collected a “truck load” of litter as part of an environmental scheme.
The trees were planted in allocated areas which are within easy walking distance of College; Bank Hall and Thursby Gardens – with Students and Staff giving their time free of charge.
This is part of The Pennine Lancashire Treescapes Project – PlanT – which will plant nearly 40,000 trees across Pennine Lancashire.
A mix of native tree species and fruit trees are being planted in a series of micro woodlands. It’s hoped they will help combat historic and ongoing losses of trees caused by urbanisation, pests and diseases.
We are proud to be part of the local community and thrilled to be able to take part in a project that gives something back in the immediate locality.
The activity will contribute toward the student assessments for the Volunteering Unit of the learners’ courses, but most importantly it goes way beyond that.
Sarah added it’s about Student wellbeing too:
“Outdoor activity promotes physical health and wellbeing, but is also extremely beneficial from a mental health perspective.
“The students worked hard planting the trees and picking the litter but we laughed so much and had a really good time.
“We are grateful to Sean Kerr, Neil Jackson and Liam Hughes from the Council Parks Department for helping with equipment and expertise.”
At Burnley College Sixth Form Centre we pride ourselves on the highest levels of teaching, alongside exceptional extra-curricular opportunities to enrich our Students’ lives.
Practical opportunities, and the ability to take part in activities such as this, is one of the things that makes studying at Burnley College so special.
