About the course

The University of Bolton’s BA (Hons) Crime and Criminal Justice degree investigates the approaches applied to crime, deviance and victimisation. Our industry experienced academic staff will support you to develop core skills in working with offenders, crime intelligence, investigation and interviewing, crime scene management, preparing for court and presenting a case profile.

On completion of the programme successful students will be able to demonstrate systematic knowledge and understanding of:

  • Core aspects of criminological theory and criminal justice processes, including a range of contributing 'sub' disciplines.

  • Specialist areas of criminology and criminal justice at the cutting edge of criminological research and social policy development.

  • A range of criminological research paradigms and methods.

  • The inherent variability of crime causation explanations and the way in which the State and non-State agencies respond to crime, including theories of punishment and the subsequent punitive and rehabilitative approaches to sentencing those who offend.

  • The changing nature of the 'criminal justice state'.

  • The development of academic skills, reading and research, the writing of essays and undertaking independent research.

  • The relationship of social class, gender, age, race, ethnicity in addition to other salient aspects of diversity which contribute to an understanding of social justice in relation to crime, victimisation and social responses to these phenomena.

  • The development of communication skills to analyse, question and debate key issues relating to criminology and criminal justice to a range of audiences, including professionals and lay people.

General Studies accepted. Assessment

A variety of formative and summative assessment strategies are employed to achieve the module learning outcomes. These include, essays, reports, presentations; role play; projects, dissertation & portfolio.

Information About Fees

The fees for 2023/24 are £9000 per year. The fees for 2023/24 for the foundation year are £6000.
