About the course

A level Art, Craft and Design is a broad-based course exploring practical, critical and contextual work through a variety of exciting 2D and/or 3D processes and media. The focus is on encouraging you to have an experimental approach to materials and techniques; to develop specialist technical competency, imagination and independence based on personal experience and taught skills. The specifications allows autonomy for you to experiment and take risks with your creative work while developing your own style. The course will provide you with a solid general platform of knowledge in a range of creative subject areas from which you can go on to specialise. You will experience working in a number of disciplines and expanding your technical and creative visual skills in at least two areas chosen from the following: Fine art i.e. drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture: Photography: Digital media: Textiles i.e. machine embroidery : 3D design. The course encourages you to investigate the importance of Art and Design in our society and you will gain a strong understanding of historic and contemporary visual art practice, through supporting contextual studies. You will gain transferrable skills in perseverance, time management, contextual interpretation and independent working skills required to realise your full creative potential. Most important, you should enjoy the process of developing your skills, ideas and understanding, as you progress through the course.

Entry Requirements

At least six GCSEs at grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects, including both English and Mathematics, and preferably Art and Design, or a related subject, in which case a minimum of a 6 is required; alternatively, a Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design, or a related subject, is accepted with a Merit/Distinction profile. Applicants without a related GCSE or Level 2 Diploma will be considered with a good portfolio of work. You should bring a portfolio of work at the interview stage.

Modules

The AS Level has one externally set component. The A Level has two components; one personal investigation (including a portfolio element and a contextual related study) and one externally set task.

Assessment

You will be assessed against the course requirements as dictated by AQA specifications. The AS Level has one externally set component. During the course there is continual assessment with the summary assessment on the successful completion of the study programme; completion of the personal investigations and exam requirements. You are assessed on your contextual studies, the complexity and depth of your understanding of materials, techniques and processes as well as the quality of your own innovative conceptions as presented in both your final outcomes and supporting sketchbook investigations and explorations.

As an example past students have gone on to be; architects, furniture designers, medical photographers, jewellery designers, animators, engagement artists/ designers. Materials and equipment will be supplied for all taught sessions. As an art student you will need your own materials and equipment for independent studies.

Extra curricular activities

Art and Design research and visits to relevant exhibitions and galleries such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park are key, and inform the reviewing, analysing, and development of personal interpretations and directions in your own creative work. You will gain an insight into the creative industries through guest talks by professional practitioners and be offered the opportunity to participate in National and International gallery visits; for example to Manchester City Gallery and Whitworth, Liverpool Tate, Bluecoat and Walker, London Galleries, Harrogate Knit and Stitch as well as residentials; past trips included Paris and Rome.
