Burnley College’s Elite Athletes celebrate record-breaking year of success
Burnley College Sixth Form Centre’s Elite Athletes have marked the end of their academic year with an online celebration of as record-breaking year which has seen them represent GB in international competition, compete for spots in the GB Olympic team, collect a plethora of gold medals and smash personal bests.
The end-of-year celebration is a highpoint in the calendar for the Elite Athletes, who combine specialist training with professionals at the College’s award-winning Fitness Evolution fitness centre, with their academic studies at A Level or on Vocational programmes in a variety of subjects.
Nathan Norris, Strength and Conditioning lead for the highly-successful and well-established Elite Athlete programme, said:
“I would like to congratulate every single member of the Class of 2020 in the Elite Athlete programme for their amazing individual successes over the last year. They have shown just what it means to be an Elite Athlete at Burnley College: they’ve shown 100% commitment; 100% motivation; 100% effort.
“I am proud to have played a part in their development as top athletes, capable of competing against the very best, established athletes in the region, the UK and the world and am looking forward to following their successful careers in future. I know for certain that we have potential Olympic gold medallists – who will be the nation;s heroes – training right here in Burnley College with us now.”
The Elite Athlete programme is open to all students studying at Burnley College, with specialist training in strength and conditioning; sports nutrition and sports psychology provided alongside their academic studies. The College is one of a handful of TASS (Talented Athlete Sponsorship Scheme) accredited Colleges in the North which showcases its commitment to providing its Elite Athletes with the academic support and flexibility to allow them to achieve outstanding results while competing at the highest possible level.
The Elite Athlete programme also offer access to physiotherapy and sports massage for students, as well as bespoke programmes to help them overcome injury and return to top-class competition safely.

It is a truly outstanding achievement and one that is placing Burnley firmly on the map as a national centre for sporting excellence.
“This year we have had an amazing 33 Elite Athletes in a variety of sports – from swimming to martial arts. from cycling to field athletics. Each week we deliver an amazing 720 hours of training to ensure our Elite Athletes are world-class and it’s certainly paying off as, on almost a weekly basis, they’re making headline news for their success.
“Applications for the next generation of Elite Athletes at Burnley College are now open. We’re keen to hear from students who have already applied for A Level or Vocational study and who are established in their sport – or are competing at a high level – to join us. “Next year’s Elite Athlete programme is set to be bigger and better than ever. A serving Royal Marine Matt Mason – already a record-breaking trans-Atlantic rower, Channel swimmer, runner and cyclist is motivating and sharing the Commando mindset to ensure our Elite Athletes share the qualities which make the Royal Marines the elite within the British Armed Forces.”
