Burnley College Sixth Form Centre students and staff help to spread festive cheer

Students and staff at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre gave money to charity to dress in crazy Christmas Jumpers. They also collected toys and tasty treats to help families in need at this special time of year.

They went Christmas crazy on national Christmas Jumper Day. They turned up in bright festive garb in exchange for donating £2 to Save the Children, the charity that helps children all over the world have a better life.

Kind students and staff also collected boxes of items for a local food bank to help needy families. They also collected toys for the town’s Toy Appeal so no child went without toys on Christmas Morning.

Organiser Amber Tither, Burnley College’s Health and Wellbeing Officer, was pleased at how the Burnley College family supported the appeals. She said:

“It was fantastic how many people joined in to support charity at this time of the year. We know that everything we have collected will help those most in need in our area or internationally. It was lovely to see the caring Burnley College family doing their best to help others at this special time of the year.”

As well as support for UK families, Save the Children also provide  medical care and educational support for children across the globe in the poorest communities.

To make Christmas Jumper Day extra special, the College’s Student Services team also showed Christmas movies in the College’s pop-up, Narnia-themed cinema.

Amber also organised a Donation Advent Scheme, with Burnley Together, which involved pop-up Advent Calendars around the College’s £100 million Campus for students and staff to fill with food cupboard staples, hygiene products and festive goodies. A Christmas Toy Appeal collection centre was also set up in the College’s Atrium in December.

Amber added:

“We received so many donations that our collection points were overflowing and we had to arrange for several collections to make room for more! We really hope we have been able to make a difference to some families’ festive celebrations after what has been an unusual year.”
