Burnley College Campus development is key investment in the future of education in East Lancashire

Work is moving on apace on a major project to further develop Burnley College’s outstanding £100 million Campus to ensure it continues to offer the most up-to-date and aspirational education facilities for the region’s learners.

A new four-storey building is due to be completed by the end of the year within the grounds of the impressive Princess Way Campus, which is at the heart of the education sector of Burnley and East Lancashire alike.

Burnley Borough Council gave the thumbs-up to exciting plans for the environmentally friendly project, meticulously planned to ensure there is minimal disruption on site and around town while building work takes place, last year and groundwork started before Christmas.

The investment will enable the College, rated Number 1 in England in the latest Government tables for student achievement aged 16-19, to lead the way in the latest innovations and developments within the education sector, including the introduction of new T Level qualifications for school leavers.

The new building will provide 20 interactive classrooms and specialist facilities (including a hospital ward simulation) predominantly for students on courses offered by the College’s successful Division of Health, Science and the Services, including the new T Levels in Health and Healthcare Science, starting this autumn. There will also be both study and social spaces in the new building, which has been designed with the student experience at its heart and will meet increasing demand in these course areas.

In addition, the College’s award-winning sports and fitness centre, Fitness Evolution, will also be expanded to meet demand for additional space to accommodate learners on the College’s acclaimed sport and fitness courses and the community who attend the gym and fitness classes. A specialist gym will be created for the College’s Elite Athletes (who compete at regional, national and international level), in addition to a Sports Therapy Suite, an environment chamber, fitness spa, sprint track, additional learning spaces and a new dance studio.

These are exciting times at Burnley College. The groundwork for the new development has almost been completed now and we are very much looking forward to seeing the building start to take shape next month.

Stuart Arnfield

Director of Finance and Resources, Burnley College

“This is a significant investment in the future of education in Burnley and a much-anticipated development in our plans to grow our amazing £100 million Campus on one site. We continue to provide the very best facilities our learners deserve and to inspire every individual on Campus to be the very best they can be.”

Plans for the development were drawn up by ABW Architects and work is being carried out by John Turner Construction Group. Work carried out to date has included ground stabilisation and piling works across the site and the coming weeks will see the construction of pile caps and grounds beams in advance of the structural steel erection.

Dwayne Taylor, Contracts Director, John Turner Construction said:

“We are delighted to be working with Burnley College for the first time after being awarded the contract for this exciting project on their high profile campus. Works are progressing well on site and the next few weeks will see the structure of the buildings develop. We intend to use our extensive experience in the construction of education projects, for the future benefit of these important facilities at the College.”
