Innovative Burnley College Dance Tutor recognised for her remote learning expertise

A talented Burnley College Sixth Form Centre  Dance Tutor has been recognised nationally for her expertise in teaching classes online and using the very latest technology and apps during the Covid-19 national emergency.

Poppy Olah’s innovative and inspirational teaching has featured in the Times Educational Supplement and is helping Tutors across the UK to enhance their remote teaching while students are remaining quarantines in their own homes to help stop the spread of the Covid-19 infection.

Poppy has shared her teaching methods, the technology she uses, alongside photos and video clips, in an informative blog post in TES, the respected education publication for teaching professionals.

She has written how her Advanced Vocational students have embraced the opportunities for creativity afforded by working at home and overcome every challenge with wide-ranging support from College, from providing IT equipment and wi-fi connectivity, to tutorials on how to make the most of the extensive Google for Education Tools.

She writes:

Myself and my colleagues have found that learners have adapted well to the changes; they are still responsive and engaged, actively taking responsibility for their work. I feel students are becoming more confident using the different teaching platforms.

” It is also providing staff with additional teaching skills to utilise in the future. “

In particular, Poppy’s use of TikTok – the popular video-sharing social network – has really fired the imagination of her students, who have been producing videos showing off their learning and practical work in their module on 1980s’ hip-hop dance styles.
