Lasting impact for students on life-changing trip to South Africa

A committed group of students have returned from a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to South Africa, completing work experience and delivering resources with funds they raised.

The 11 Uniformed Public Services and Sports students organised the Miles with Meaning challenge ahead of their trip, clocking up the 10,000 mile equivalent of the distance from Burnley College to the South African town by running, cycling and walking to raise funds.

In addition to raising £1,750, the team of students delivered multi-skills sports sessions and provided vital resources to partner schools in the South African city.

The students personally delivered classroom stationery, books and sports equipment provided from their fundraising to Soutpan Primary School and Van Der Kemp Primary School to support opportunities for play and physical education.

The team also provided sanitary products for students at Isaac Booi Senior Primary School which will help to address period poverty, improve attendance and boost learners’ overall wellbeing.

Steve Garstang, Lecturer in Uniformed Public Services at Burnley College accompanied the students on the trip and supported them in their fundraising and planning. He explained how fulfilling the trip was and shared his pride in the group:

“Seeing our hard work and fundraising efforts turn into resources that will directly benefit children and schools was incredibly rewarding.

“This trip was about much more than gaining coaching experience. It was about giving something back, building relationships and creating opportunities for young people.

“I am extremely proud of every student involved and the difference they have made.”

The donations will continue to benefit hundreds of children across the three schools in the coming years, creating a lasting legacy from the team’s fundraising efforts and their adventure of a lifetime in South Africa.

The trip was organised in collaboration with United Through Sport and RiSE International. The experience represents just one example of Burnley College’s commitment to developing socially responsible and community minded young people, while also providing learners with life-changing global experiences.
