Students Go the Distance Fundraising for South Africa Adventure

An intrepid team of Uniformed Public Services and Sport students have successfully completed the Miles with Meaning challenge, taking their first steps towards the adventure of a lifetime in South Africa.

Learners worked together to walk, run and cycle over 6,000 miles – conquering the equivalent of the impressive distance between Burnley College and their destination in Gqeberha – and have raised an incredible £1,750 for United Through Sport along the way.

The challenge tested learners’ teamwork, resilience and fitness through a mixture of outdoor activities, gym sessions, organised training and independent exercise – with every participant going the extra mile to contribute to the final distance.

These inspiring fundraising efforts support their upcoming work experience trip, one of a series of global enrichment opportunities run by Burnley College in collaboration with RiSE International. On the trip, students will deliver multi-skills sports sessions and provide clothing and new sports equipment to partner schools in the South African city.

Steve Garstang, Lecturer in Uniformed Public Services at Burnley College, praised the team’s commitment and enthusiasm:

“We’re incredibly proud of the spirit that our students have shown, giving it their absolute all to complete the challenge.

“The money they’ve raised will ensure that United Through Sport can continue its vital mission of helping disadvantaged communities reach their full potential through sport, education and health services.

“This trip is so much more than simply an educational journey; it’s a chance for our learners to step outside of their comfort zone and use their skills to really make a difference.”
