Leaving Her Mark Behind – Burnley College Student Creates Stunning Mural

A talented Art and Design Student has truly left her mark as she leaves Burnley College by designing and painting a captivating mural in her former department.

“Untangle Creatively” is in acrylic paint and emulsion and follows the walls of the Creative Arts and Media department at the college.

Enfys Dwyer-Jones received a distinction in her Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design and is planning to take a gap year working on commissions and travelling before deciding on her next steps.

Enfys sat down with us to talk about how the mural came to be:

Tell us about your experience painting the mural for the Creative Arts and Media division.

It was an incredibly fun and fulfilling project to work on. Painting the mural allowed me to express myself creatively on a large scale. The process itself was immersive, exciting and challenging.

How long did it take you to complete the mural from start to finish?

The entire process took around 100 hours. This includes the initial planning and concept development, as well as the actual painting.

What was the concept behind the mural?

The concept was inspired by the journeys that people undertake, particularly those related to self-discovery through college or various activities. I wanted to capture the essence of personal growth and transformation, which is really relevant to the field of Creative Arts and Media.

Did the design evolve over time, or did you have a clear vision from the start?

The overall theme remained consistent, but the design definitely evolved. I went through three or four different iterations before settling on the final design.

Was this your first major commissioned piece?

Yes, this was my first big, commissioned piece and my first mural as well. It was a significant milestone in my artistic career. Taking on such a large project was intimidating, especially since it required a lot of time and effort. But in the end, everything came together beautifully, and I’m really proud of the result.

How did you feel about the scale and scope of the project initially?

Initially, I was quite intimidated. However, once I started, I found that each step flowed into the next. The project began to feel like a natural progression.

What has been the feedback from others about the mural?

I’ve received a lot of positive feedback, which has been very encouraging. People have commented on how much brighter and more vibrant the space feels compared to what was there before. The previous wall had dark blue wallpaper with computers and numbers, which was quite outdated. The mural has brought new life and energy to the area, making it a more inspiring place to be.
