About the course

The purpose of Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Civil Engineering is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the construction and civil engineering sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualification aim is to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.

The objectives of Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Civil Engineering are to: ● give students the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to achieve high performance in the international construction environment ● develop students with enquiring minds, who have the abilities and confidence to work across different business functions and to lead, manage, respond to change, and tackle a range of complex construction situations ● provide the core skills required for a range of careers in construction, specifically those related to management and operations ● offer a balance between employability skills and the knowledge essential for students with entrepreneurial, employment or academic ambitions ● develop students’ understanding of the major impact that new digital technologies have on the construction environment ●

Entry Requirements

Students should meet the profile of one of the following: ● A* to C grade or 9 to 4 in GCSE Maths (or equivalent) is strongly recommended. ● a BTEC Level 4 qualification in construction ● a GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) ● other related Level 3 qualifications ● an Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution ● related work experience ● an international equivalent of the above.

Modules

Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering ● Requires 240 credits, of which 120 credits are at Level 5 and 120 credits are at Level 4. Level 5 units Group Project (Pearson-set) Personal Professional Development Advanced Structural Design Construction Technology for Complex Buildings Projects Further Mathematics for Construction Plus 45 credits from the list of Level 5 units.

Assessment

● For the HND, two core units − one core, 15-credit, unit at Level 4 and one core, 30-credit unit at Level 5 − will be assessed by a mandatory Pearson-set assignment targeted at particular skills. All other units are assessed by centre-devised internal assignments.

Careers & Progression

The Level 5 Higher National Diploma is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant construction-related courses, for example: ● BSc (Hons) Structural Engineering ● BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering ● BEng (Hons) Civil and Infrastructure Engineering.
