About the course

The Higher National Certificate in Film & Television aims to give students the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to achieve high
performance in the international film and television environment. The course will develop students with enquiring minds, who have the abilities and confidence to work across different business functions and to lead, manage, respond to change and tackle a range of complex film and television situations. The HNC will provide the core skills required for a range of careers in film and television. The course will develop students’ understanding of the major impact that new digital technologies have on the film and television environment and equip students with knowledge and understanding of culturally diverse
organisations, cross-cultural issues, diversity and values, and to allow flexible study to meet local and specialist needs.

Entry Requirements

All applications are subject to an interview before admission to the course. UCAS Points: 104 (equivalent to DMM in BTEC or BCC in A Level). Applications from individuals with non-standard qualifications, relevant work or life experience and who can demonstrate the ability to cope with and benefit from degree-level studies are welcome to apply for the course.

Modules

There are two main Modules that you will complete across the year which will assess a variety of skills including; Contextual Knowledge, Ideas Generation And Development, Technical Knowledge And Skill, Professional Practice and Communication. These modules are; Module A Process & Practice Module A1: Concept & Development. This module builds skills in the studio and out on location, working on live briefs from industry as well as skills building tasks to improve knowledge and practical skills. Module A2: Creative Project. This is a large project based module centred around using your skills from the first unit and putting them to a live brief with a professional final outcome.

Assessment

On this course you will be assessed via ongoing project based portfolio work and practical skills assessments. This will be assessed by your lecturers and verified by Pearson through an External Examiner.

Careers & Progression

The HNC in Film & Television prepares learners for work in the industry or to progress on to a the HND and/or BA qualification. It prepares students to move on to specific areas of film and television at Level 6 or to enter employment with the qualities and abilities necessary for roles that require personal responsibility and decision-making. Our BTEC Higher National in Film and Television support students in developing the key skills, qualities and strengths that employers are looking for. The course will have a focus on working with employers in the area to produce video content. The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in film and television, which students can build on, should they decide to continue their studies beyond the Certificate stage. The Level 5 Higher National Diploma allows students to specialise by committing to specific career paths and progression routes to degree-level study.

Equipment Needed

You will require plug in headphones and a 64GB SD memory card.

Equipment Supplied

The college has two Media Studios and multiple high spec computer spaces with access to the full Adobe Creative Cloud. Learners can book out cameras, lighting and other equipment overnight or at weekends.

Extra curricular activities

As part of the course we are involved with filming, interviewing and creating filmed content for local and national companies. These live projects provide excellent work experience opportunities for our students in a real life scenarios, building knowledge, skills and behaviours essential to employment in the industry.
