About the course

Our Bachelor Degree BEng (Hons) in Engineering Design is awarded by Buckinghamshire New University and accredited by The Institution of Engineering Designers (IED). This course will enable you to develop your knowledge of the underpinning principles of engineering in your choice of three specialist subject areas:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Production Engineering

This course will develop your analytical and theoretical knowledge of core and specialist engineering principles in your chosen specialism. The programmme will enhanced your underpinning skills enabling you to progress further within the exciting, challenging and diverse fields of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing. Completing a Bachelor Degree BEng (Hons) in Engineering Design opens up further opportunities to progress your career, your future earnings, and your potential.

If you already have a Level 4 (HNC) or Level 5 (HND or Foundation Degree Engineering) you may have the opportunity to shorten the total length of the programme as this study progreamme offers three points of entry (post Level 3, post Level 4, and post Level 5). If you have pre-existing qualifications, you will be invited to attend an interviewed to identify the most suitable point of entry for you.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including Maths, English and a Science, Technology or Engineering-related subject. A-levels at grade C or above in both a Mathematical based subject and a Science, Technology, Engineering or additional Mathematics related subject, or 90+ credits in an Engineering BTEC at level 3. Students from a HNC/HND and Foundation Degree Engineering may have the opportunity to join this programme as part of the progression route at Level 5 or Level 6. These students will be interviewed to identify their point of entry. Applications are also welcomed from mature students who have gained relevant skills through a wide range of vocational qualifications or responsible experience and experiential learning will also usually be considered.

Assessment

You will learn through a range of teaching methods that will include: Lectures, Seminars, Tutorials, Workshops and Practical Sessions, Online resources, Independent Learning Research and Industrial Visits. Assessments are based on Written Assignments, Practical and Laboratory Work, and Presentations so that you can show application of the subjects learned in the classroom. At Level 6 (Year 4) there is considerable emphasis placed on the final project and dissertation, which makes up 50% of the final year of the course.

Careers & Progression

With a Bachelor Degree in Engineering Design, you could earn a salary in excess of £38,000+ across a broad range of roles through the Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing sector. You'll be eligible to apply for roles such as Design Engineer, CAD Engineer, Product Engineer, Project Engineer.

Additional Details

Equipment Needed

You will need a notebook, pen, pencil, Casio FX-83GTX Scientific Calculator (or similar), and a tablet/laptop with a word processor for writing assignments. You also need a sketchpad and sketch pens which will be provided during the first week of the course for a small contribution of £5.00.

Equipment Supplied

All specialist software, experiment equipment and specialist computer resources are made available during the course.

Information About Fees

Course fees are only payable via a Degree Apprenticeship subject to your eligibility therefore your application must be backed by an employer who is willing to support a Degree Apprenticeship. Employers may be able to fund this qualification through the Apprenticeship Levy or pay a reduced contribution to the course fees depending on circumstances.
