About the course

The course uses a multi-disciplinary approach to investigate the world from a social science perspective, uniting the areas of health, wellbeing and social science. You will explore health from socio-cultural and global perspectives, as well as from a political, environmental and social policy view. As you learn you will develop skill-sets employers value, such as understanding and working in diverse social settings, critical thinking, report writing, presenting and research methods. On this flexible programme, you can choose from a variety of optional modules in your second and third years of study, allowing you to tailor the programme to suit your own interests, working to your strengths and fine-tuning your career path. In your final year, you will work on a large project, exploring a specific area of interest to yourself and your career plans. You will be able to tailor your dissertation to a particular area of interest, such as gender, diversity, ethnicity, ageing population, mental health, wellbeing, youth, and community. The standard full time tuition fee rate for this course in 2019/20 for Home and EU students is £9000 per year. The standard full time tuition fee for the Foundation Year for this course in 2019/20 is £6000.

Cost Information

Years 1, 2 and 3 (delivered at Burnley College): The standard full time tuition fee rate for this course in 2020/21 for Home and EU students is £9000 per year. The standard full time tuition fee for the Foundation year for this course in 2020/21 is £6000.

Entry requirements

A typical offer will be a UCAS Tariff score of 80. A minimum of two full A Levels (or equivalent) is required, however, every application is considered on an individual basis. The modules available on this course are: Year 1, Making Sense of Society: Understanding the Social World; Policy in Context; Understanding Sport Development; Contemporary Debates; Making Sense of Society: The Sociological Imagination; Policy and Society; Sociology of Health; Wellbeing in Society. Year 2: Race, Ethnicity and Migration (optional); Citizenship, Community and Welfare (optional); Ethical Issues in Health and Social Sciences; Gender and Sexuality in Society (optional); Research Methods; Understanding the Work Environment (1 and 2). Year 3: Ageing Well through the Life-Course; Body, Culture and Society; Disability, Mental Health and the Criminal Justice System; Dissertation; Global Health and Society; Leadership and Teamwork.

Assessment

The balance of assessment will vary but will include coursework, written exams and practical tests.

Careers & Progression

On completion of your degree, you will be able to pursue a range of careers in the leisure, health and social sectors, including public service, non-government organisations or charities. You will be well qualified for positions such as health assessment officers, exercise co-ordinators and lifestyle coaches. Social policy positions will also be within your grasp, or you may choose to pursue a career in the voluntary sector, working with people in recovery. As a graduate of this course, you will also be able to further your studies at postgraduate level. Throughout your time with us, we will support you on the route to your chosen career.
