About the course

Game design is a growing industry that allows individuals to work towards creating the art side of games within the industry. This course is art driven, focusing on the designing of characters and environments using industry standard software. You will learn skills such as traditional art, animation, graphics, 3D modelling bringing these skills together within the Unreal Engine. You will also write compelling story lines that give depth to your games, as well as developing relevant skills to succeed in university and the industry. We use a variety of theory and practical based approaches to assess you, including reports, presentations and practical assignments.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects including English Language or Mathematics OR a relevant Level 2 Diploma with Merit grade or above and a GCSE at grade 5 in English Language or Mathematics.

Assessment

We use a variety of theory and practical based approaches to assess students including portfolios, reports and practical work such as 2D games and full stand-alone game applications in 3D. There are also four units that are externally assessed.

Careers & Progression

On successful completion of this course, you may decide to progress onto an entry level position within the industry. You will also have the opportunity to progress onto a wide variety of Degree courses. Careers that this course may lead to include but not limited to; Games Designer, Graphic Artist, Animator, VFX, Architectural visualisations.

Extra curricular activities

There are plenty of activities and visits to take part in that will help you achieve your ambitions. Past visits have included: Residentials to Berlin, Paris and London, visits to the Warner Brothers Studios and Bradford Media Museum and visits to gaming expos in Birmingham and Manchester. You will also benefit from a wide range of guest speakers to enrich the curriculum.
