About the course

This course will enable you to develop a broad knowledge and understanding of factors surrounding the political system of the UK, including Parliament, the Prime Minister, political parties, pressure groups, local Government and the European Union (EU). You will develop your capacity for critical thinking, analyse relationships between different aspects of government and politics, acquire an informed understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the individual and engage with contemporary politics. A number of students have been involved in the College Debating Society as well as getting heavily involved in recent elections, running a hustings event with local MPs.

Entry Requirements

At least five GCSEs at grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects, including both English and Mathematics. There are no additional entry requirements for this course. Entry requirements for all qualifications are subject to a reference from your previous school or place of study

On successful completion of this course you may decide to progress onto an Apprenticeship or a Higher/Degree Apprenticeship. You will also have the opportunity to progress onto a wide variety of Degree courses. Careers that this course may lead to include Journalist, Teacher, Lawyer, Civil Service, Member of Parliament, Political Assisstant, Government Social Research Officer, roles within the Civil Service, Diplomatic Service Officer.

Additional Details

Extra curricular activities

In previous years, the College has organised trips to the Houses of Parliament, the Supreme Court and the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. The department is involved in the Debating society, giving students the opportunity to develop and articulate their socio-political ideas among their peers.
