About the course

This  Level 1 Diploma in Wood Occupations incorporates both Carpentry and Joinery and Furniture Studies developing confidences and building an introduction to wood trades that ideal for starting your training in this Construction Profession.  

 

You will learn safe working habits, PPE, tool care, and workshop housekeeping while building core hand skills in measuring, marking out, sawing, chiselling, planing, drilling, jointing, sanding, and finishing. Teaching covers simple drawings and basic tolerances, site carpentry fundamentals such as small frames and studwork, bench joinery basics including frames and panels to set dimensions, and a focused furniture strand where you explore design fundamentals, timber selection, simple joints for stools, small tables, or boxes, surface preparation, and finishing.  

 

Training takes place in well equipped workshops with individual benches, demonstrations on shared machinery, and close guidance from industry experienced tutors as you complete structured projects and build a photographic portfolio. 

 

Assessment blends short online knowledge tests with observed practical tasks and a small synoptic project where you plan, set out, and make a simple item to specification and deadline.  

 

On completion, you can progress to Level 2 Site Carpentry, Level 2 Architectural Bench Joinery, or an Apprenticeship, opening entry level opportunities as a trainee site carpenter, improver bench joiner, workshop assistant, or junior furniture maker, with clear next steps and employer aligned skills.

Entry Requirements

3 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, or a relevant Entry Level qualification.

  • Observed practical tasks: You plan, set out, and complete carpentry, joinery, and furniture projects to simple drawings, dimensions, and tolerances while demonstrating safe working.

  • Short online or written knowledge tests: Health and safety, materials, tools, basic building principles, and drawings.

  • Synoptic practical project: A timed end task where you make a straightforward item to specification and deadline, evidencing accuracy, finish quality, and safe methods.

  • Portfolio of evidence: Photos, drawings, cutting lists, risk assessments, method statements, and assessor feedback mapped to unit outcomes.

  • Professional discussion and questioning: To confirm understanding, problem solving, and reasons for tool and method choices.

  • Ongoing skills reviews: Regular feedback on productivity, housekeeping, tool care, and adherence to health, safety, and environmental requirements.

  • Careers & Progression

    The Level 1 Diploma in Wood Occupations prepares you to progress to Level 2 Site Carpentry, Level 2 Architectural Bench Joinery, or Level 2 Furniture Making, and to pursue relevant Apprenticeships. Entry level roles include trainee site carpenter, carpentry improver, workshop assistant, trainee bench joiner, shopfitting assistant, timber merchant assistant, or maintenance assistant. Many learners then move to Level 3 and work toward an NVQ through on site assessment. With experience, you can advance to skilled carpenter or joiner, furniture maker, shopfitter, self employed craftsperson, team leader, working foreperson, estimator, or site supervisor, supported by a portfolio and safe working habits for industry card applications, subject to scheme rules.

    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Safety boots and workwear which must be durable trousers and long-sleeve layers.

    You will have the opportunity to enter the national competition Skillbuild. Success may lead to entry into international competition at Worldskills. You will have the opportunity to visit a wide range of manufacturing and industry sites to see the development and use of state of the art equipment and materials. You will also benefit from a wide range of guest speakers.
