About the course

This course is being offered through Skills Bootcamps - part of the Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee, helping everyone gain skills for life. As part of this Bootcamp you will gain;

  • A City and Guilds Level 3 Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation qualification
  • A BPEC Level 3 Battery Storage / Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) qualification
  • A BPEC Level 3 Solar Photo Voltaic Systems (Solar PV) qualification

Bootcamps are part-funded by the Government and offer a flexible way for you to gain the skills you need to upskill and progress within your role.

This course will be delivered using a blend of traditional classroom-style teaching and practical hands-on sessions. The combination of both methods will help you to gain the understanding you need to practically apply the knowledge gained in your current / future role. This Skills Bootcamp will also include mentoring from the tutor, who is an experienced industry professional and will provide guidance and support to you throughout your training.

The first stage of the Bootcamp is a Level 3 City & Guilds Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation course which is typically delivered over 3 days on a one day per week basis. This course is specifically designed for experienced /competent electricians who are interested in expanding their business by installing the latest development in electrical technology. On successful completion of this qualification candidates can apply for inclusion on the OLEV (The Office for Low Emission Vehicles) register of competent Electric Vehicle Charging Installers. The course is designed to support installers to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the growing low carbon transport market.

The next part of the Bootcamp is a BPEC Level 3 Battery Storage / Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) course which is typically delivered over 2 days on a one day per week basis. This course is aimed at practicing electricians, electrical technicians, and engineers with experience of electrical installations, and associated inspection and testing and giving them the necessary training to upskill their existing skills to install EESS. The programme has been designed to meet the requirements of dedicated electrical energy storage systems (EESS) in accordance with the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems and the MCS Battery Standard MIS 3012. 

The final part of this Bootcamp is a Level 3 Solar Photo Voltaic Systems (Solar PV) course which is typically delivered over 3 days on a one day per week basis. This course is specifically designed to provide electricians with the skills and knowledge required to install small scale photovoltaic (PV) systems. The course has been structured to meet the requirements of the National Occupational Standards and is recognised as a demonstration of competence for the Micro-generation Certification Scheme (MCS). This programme is a requirement of the Minimum Technical Competency document for PV (Photovoltaic) installers and is recognised by MCS operators as evidence of suitable training. The course is designed to support installers to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the growing renewable energy technology market.

Entry Requirements

EV Charging course:- All candidates must have: 18th Edition, BS 7671, Inspection and Testing L3 and be working within the electrical industry

Battery Storage & Solar PV courses:- Trainees should hold a formal craft qualification e.g.

N/SVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation (Buildings and Structures) and BS 7671: 2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations (18th Edition) qualification. Or.

Equivalent historical qualifications (as found in EAS Table 4B/4C) Electrotechnical Assessment Specification Guide August 2023. Or

ECS Gold Card, JIB Electrician or Approved Electrician Card

Stand-alone technical certificates/vocationally related qualifications (VRQ) (non-competency based) are NOT acceptable


Assessment

EV Charging course – Assessment will be via an open book online exam and practical assessment within the training and assessment area Battery Storage & Solar PV courses - Assessments will consist of a combination of practical and theory examinations, carried out within the training period

Careers & Progression

This course will provide practicing electricians the installation requirements and knowledge to help you and your workforce to make the most of consumer demand for low-cost alternatives to conventional fossil fuelled vehicles, as well as the tax reductions and incentives going electric can provide to domestic, commercial and industrial clients. It will also provide you with the skills to select the most appropriate solar Photovoltaic system for a property to meet the client’s needs and to commission and handover the system, whilst meeting the legal requirements of the installation process.

This course is available through Skills Bootcamps – part of the Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee, helping everyone gain skills for life. SME learners applying for this course will pay £281 for the Bootcamp. Higher fees are payable for applicants from non-SME's, please get in touch for more details.
