About the course

Kick-start your career in the Performing Arts with this one year pre-advanced course for students who are working towards the entry requirements for Level 3. You will study key areas including Acting, Musical Theatre and Dance, whilst working towards achieving your Maths and/or English GCSEs. The course is made up of seven units of study covering topics in auditioning, preparing performances, acting, musical theatre, the performing arts industry, movement, devising, voice, script work and dance. You will be assessed practically in rehearsals and performances using video evidence and tutor observations. Written work is assessed via coursework and internal assessments. We collaborate with employers including The Lowry Theatre, Burnley Youth Theatre, Elevate Young Minds, New Live Theatre Company, Ludus Dance, Shakespeare Switched and many more! After completing this pre-advanced course, students are able to progress on to the Advanced Level 3 Performing Arts or Dance course.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of two GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English or Mathematics OR a Level 1 Diploma in Performing Arts, including English or Mathematics.

Modules

The course is made up of seven units of study including: Unit 1: Skills Development for Performing Arts, Unit 2: Professional Development, Unit 3: Creative Interpretation, Unit 4: Audition and Portfolio Process, Unit 5: Preparing for a Performing Arts Production, Unit 6: Performing Arts Production and Unit 7: Responding to a Progression Opportunity.

Assessment

All units are internally assessed and consider: application of knowledge and understanding, the development of practical and technical skills, professional discipline throughout rehearsal, performance processes and creative input. This can be assessed individually and through group work both in practical and written forms. Assessment will take place through recordings of rehearsals and final performances, written coursework, research and evaluative assignments. Grades for each unit can be awarded at pass, merit or distinction. Students have two attempts to meet the criteria for each unit.

Careers & Progression

On successful completion of this course you may decide to progress onto the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts or Dance. Careers that this course may lead to include Actor, Musical Theatre Performer, Singer, Dancer or Director.

Additional Details

Equipment Needed

Black practical attire is required for your classes. You will also be expected to purchase jazz shoes and/or character shoes. It is expected that all students purchase one company t-shirt.

Equipment Supplied

You will have access to industry standard performance and rehearsal spaces. The department also provides access to high-spec video cameras, changing facilities, ballet barres, acro equipment and PCs/laptops for theory lessons.

Extra curricular activities

You will have the opportunity to attend a wide variety of trips and visits. Trips include an overnight London Theatre visit with two West End shows and a professional workshop, visits to professional theatre productions across the North West, practical workshops with working industry professionals and involvement in community theatre projects. We offer additional training with our Dance Academy and Musical Theatre Academy facilitated by our tutors, providing further creative and performance opportunities. You will also benefit from a wide range of guest speakers to enrich the curriculum.
