About the course

Achieving advanced level skills in painting and decorating can set you up with a career for life and a progression onto higher levels of learning. Our apprenticeships with local businesses will allow you to focus on expanding your skills to a higher technical level in both the practical and theoretical aspects of your study. You will be employed by a company and attend Themis at Burnley College one day per week*. You will be taught in our state-of-the-art, industry standard workshops equipped with an extensive range of tools and equipment to enable successful completion of your qualification. Our construction trainers have extensive up-to-date knowledge and industrial experience. Well-established links with employers ensure that our apprentices are kept up-to-date with the latest developments and career opportunities within the industry. Your study programme will cover a wide range of topics including: Applying paint systems by HVLP and Airless spray Applying specialist wall coverings Building methods and construction technology Producing specialist decorative and architectural finishes

Entry Requirements

A minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects including GCSE English Language, Mathematics and Science. Ideally, applicants may have also completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating. Applicants must be hardworking, reliable and motivated. As part of the interview process, Apprentices will undertake a BKSB assessment in English, Mathematics and ICT. Applicants who do not meet the exact entry requirements but hold relevant industry experience are encouraged to apply. Applicants who do not meet the exact entry requirements may also be considered.

Assessment

Knowledge learning outcomes will be assessed via an on-screen assessment which is externally set and marked by the awarding organisation supported by several theoretical assessments. You will also complete a range of practical assessments within Themis at Burnley College. Performance learning outcomes will require auditable evidence of competent performance from the workplace which demonstrates your ability against set assessment criteria, completing a NVQ portfolio of evidence.

Careers & Progression

On successful completion of this course you may progress to a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship in a trade related area. Other courses that are available include HNC/D in Construction and Foundation Degrees. Careers that this course may lead to include self-employed painter and decorator, or study professional qualifications leading to becoming a site-supervisor/manager, Health and Safety Manager, Surveyor/Quantity Surveyor.
