About the course
This course introduces the basics of wood machining, cabinet making and traditional and modern methods of upholstery, giving students the opportunity to develop their skills in design and furniture making. Assessment is via assignment writing and practical projects.

Entry Requirements
Two GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English OR a relevant Foundation Learning qualification including GCSE grade 3 in English. There may also be an additional assessment.
Assessment
Assessment is by practical and theory assessments completed throughout the year. Additionally, there are moderated exams in Health and Safety during this first year.
Careers & Progression
Progression from this area of study can be to an apprenticeship in both furniture and wood trades, or alternatively onto the next level of the study programme.

Extra curricular activities
The division is focused on links with the community and community projects, offering the opportunity for work experience for full time learners. All areas regularly host and compete in regional and national skills competitions. Other examples include: Entry into national furniture medals for excellence awards, visits to national trade exhibitions and furniture company visits.
