About the course

Students study a range of literature from the late 1500s to the present and examine its social, political and historical influence. Current modules of study are American Literature, including texts such as The Great Gatsby and A Streetcar Named Desire, and Drama and Poetry Pre-1900, where students will have the opportunity to examine the literature of the Renaissance. Other texts recently studied include Frankenstein, 1984, The Wasp Factory, The Handmaid's Tale and Dracula. There will be an opportunity to explore in detail a chosen area of literature through coursework, where students will pick their own texts and appraise these from a theoretical or thematic perspective. English Literature is an inter-disciplinary subject that has key links to other A Level subjects including History, Religion and Philosophy, Drama and Theatre Studies, Film, English Language and Politics.
