About the course

This course will help you to pursue your interests and skills in a range of practical drama elements including: Acting, Directing, Costume, Set Design and  Technical Design (Sound and Lighting). There is a twin approach to learning on this course. There are practical exploration classes which will focus on experiential learning and how drama and theatre is created and performed. Alongside this there is academic and theoretical underpinning which will focus on a range of practitoners, theatre companies and texts. This course will increase your experience of live performance; allowing you to demonstrate your personal creativity, discipline, organisation, commitment and confidence.

Entry Requirements

At least six GCSEs at grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects, including both English and Mathematics. Additional entry requirements for this course are: A minimum of grade 5 in a performing arts related subject such as GCSE Drama is preferred. In exceptional circumstances, we will consider students without the sufficient GCSEs who have a proven record in performance or a portfolio of design work demonstrating real capability in the area.

Modules

Component 1: Drama and Theatre. Component 2: Creating Original Drama. Component 3: Making Theatre

Assessment

Component 1: Drama and Theatre is a three hour written exam that is externally assessed. The exam will be based on your in-depth study of two plays and your thinking about a live theatre production that you will see in your second year. Component 2: Creating Original Drama centres around you devising a piece of live theatre. You will produce a working notebook that will outline your rationale for the piece with reflection on the development and refinement of your work. This is assessed by you course tutor and moderated by the exam board. Component 3: Making Theatre. You will practically explore extracts from three texts as an actor, director or designer. The final extract is performed for a public performance and is assessed by a visiting external examiner There will be continuous tutor assessment throughout the course to ensure that you are working to your full potential.

Careers & Progression

Studying this course alongside other Level 3 qualifications will enable you to progress on to university. You could continue your studies within the arts - Drama, Theatre, Film and TV or in other areas, as this course will provide you with transferrable skills such as teamwork, creative problem solving and working under pressure to meet deadlines. These skills are highly valued by universities and employers .

Additional Details

Equipment Needed

You will need to purchase set theatre texts. The details of these will be provided by your course tutor.

Equipment Supplied

You will have access to industry standard performance and rehearsal spaces. The department also provides access to high-spec video cameras, changing facilities, ballet barres, acro equipment and PCs/laptops for theory lessons.

Extra curricular activities

Visits and trips to the theatre happen termly to local, regional and national theatres.  The annual Creative and Arts and Media London trip is open to all Drama and Theatre studies students, which will enable students to view a number of productions in the West End.
