About the course

The level 3 BTEC media course is a 2 year project-based course with no exams. The course aims to build your creative planning, directing, and editing skills while making media productions. We set high expectations and promote multiple opportunities for professional work experience, improving your employability and readiness for university. We help develop your skills and set you on your path to working in your chosen sector of the media industry, from film and TV to photography, graphic design, advertising, journalism, animation, game design, publishing and marketing. You will learn research, developing ideas, planning, photography, filming techniques, lighting, video editing, media theory, photo editing, graphic design, and many more skills.
During the course, you will create multiple short films, music videos, digital magazines & posters as well as video & photographic adverts.
You will be taught by team industry professionals with over 50 years of teaching experience between them. Our lessons are very practical and make full use of our excellent camera, studio and computer equipment. The media content you create will be added to our Burnley College Youtube channel and will be exhibited in our end of year Oscars awards.

Entry Requirements

The requirements for this course are a minimum of 5 grade 5’s at GCSE. One of these grades needs to be Maths, English or English Literature. A media GCSE is preferable but not essential.

Modules

Module A1: Skills Development: This unit helps develop learners skills in photography video and graphic design. Module A2: Creative Project: This is a live brief where students produce digital marketing content for social media. Module B1: Personal Progression: In this unit students produce website portfolio and investigate future career options. They also produce a portfolio of evidence focused mainly on photography and graphic design. Module B2: Creative Industry Response: Learner's create music videos and one short film in this unit. Module C1: Critical Self Appraisal: This is a critical reflection level 4 unit. This unit helps to bridge the gap between level 3 and 4 really helps students with the move to university level work.

Assessment

The course is assessed on coursework created and practical work, there are no exams. This allows for much more time and delivery on practical work and all aspects of the production process, from pre-production, production and post-production. Learners get ongoing feedback throughout the projects as well as summative feedback at the end of each unit. All coursework is assessed against the same five criteria for all units, informing ideas, problem solving, technical skill, professional practice and communication. Finally assessed work is grades at pass, merit or distinction.

Careers & Progression

Most students go on to study media at university, some going on to do apprenticeships. We also have students that move directly into industry. A number of our students start working in the industry whilst on the course. The course is designed that students can move into any Media sector for their career. It gives the students a broad range of skills in photography, TV/film and graphic design.

Equipment Needed

All equipment is provided by the college, however having a camera is advantageous during the course.

Equipment Supplied

The college has two Media Studios that can be used for both photography and filming. We have multiple Apple Mac suits with the full Adobe Creative Cloud installed. Learners can book out cameras and other equipment overnight or at weekends.

Extra curricular activities

As part of the course we are involved with filming and photographing for other departments and other courses. We also produce promotional material for the college and its courses. This is often even extended out to local businesses. Most of these projects are over and above students' college work. it provides excellent work experience opportunities for our students in a real life scenario.
