About the course
Environmental science is a broad subject area where you will be able to develop the knowledge and skills to understand the consequences on the environment of growing populations and high-standards of living. This course provides a number of exciting opportunities working with the National Trust, which will help you to develop an understanding of environmental conservation and its impact on our surroundings. Field trips are a key part of this study programme and include visits to coastal, land-based and countryside environments. You will also develop practical and analytical skills and be able to apply the knowledge gained on the field trips in our state of the art laboratories and facilities. This course offers you an insight into subjects at the heart of countryside and environment, including ecology and conservation, estate management, environmental and coastal issues, woodland, plants and soil science.

Entry Requirements
A minimum of two GCSEs at Grade 5 or above including English Language OR a relevant Level 1 Diploma and a GCSE grade 5 in English Language.
Assessment
Assessment is via practical observation and a portfolio.
Careers & Progression
On successful completion of this course you may progress to an Advanced course or to an Apprenticeship. When you have completed your studies other courses that are available include a range of Degree courses. Careers that this course may lead to include sustainability consultant, animal migration engineer, vertical farmer, marine biologist, landscape gardener, grounds-person and greenkeeper.

Extra curricular activities
You may have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities to enhance your studies, including: a field trip to Malham in the Yorkshire Dales to learn how the limestone pavement is effectively maintained, dry stone walling with the National Trust, tree planting with United Utilities, regeneration of local landmarks. Previous activities have included students being involved in the redevelopment of the Victorian drain system at Gawthorpe Hall, and visiting football clubs to learn about careers in grounds keeping.
