About the course

Advances in computing are transforming the way we work. Studying Computer Science encourages students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of computing as a basis for progression into further learning and/or employment. Emphasis is placed on learning how to write code i.e. program. Students will be introduced to the language Python and will learn how to develop coding solutions for increasingly complex situations that in turn will enhance their ability to simplify real world problems. Students will also study the fundamental components of a computer and learn how these create the most powerful machines ever known.

Entry Requirements

At least six GCSEs at grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects, including both English and Mathematics. Additional entry requirements for this course are: A minimum of a grade 6 in Mathematics or a 5 in GCSE Computing.

Assessment

This course is assessed in the following way: 20% coursework 80% external examination

On successful completion of this course you may decide to progress onto an Apprenticeship or a Higher/Degree Apprenticeship. You will also have the opportunity to progress onto Degree courses. Careers that this course may lead to include Business ICT, Security Analyst, Programmer, Hardware Engineer and Software Developer.

Additional Details

Extra curricular activities

Trips and extra-curricular activities include the student-run Raspberry Pi Club, visits to The National Computer Museum, a trip to Bletchley Park, where the first computer was built by Alan Turing to crack the Enigma Code and visits to Russell Group universities.
