About the course

A-Level Biology is a stimulating and diverse course covering a wide range of topics from the fundamentals of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to Human physiology and Ecology. Following on from your GCSE Biology studies you will build upon your prior knowledge and understanding of the subject. Throughout the two year course you will develop the skills to apply biological principles to solve problems in medicine, plant science, genetics and scientific related mathematical scenarios. Also, your knowledge in the course will further your understanding of the human body and the natural world. With a wide range of practical skills covered during the course you will develop the skill and confidence to design your own investigations and be competent in applying your knowledge to novel technical situations. Through the successful completion of 12 required practicals, you will be awarded with a Practical Endorsement, which is recognised by universities.

Entry Requirements

At least six GCSEs at grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects, including both English and Mathematics. Additional entry requirements for this course are: A minimum of a grade 66 in GCSE Dual Science or a Grade 6 in GCSE Biology.

Assessment

You will be assessed through examination, with 2 examinations in your AS year and 3 exams in your A2 year. Throughout the 2 year course you will also be assessed on your ability to carry out required practical work.

Careers & Progression

Due to the diverse nature of the course in terms of subject knowledge and skills, an A-Level in Biology can lead to a wide range of jobs, apprenticeships and further scientific study at University. Past students have gone onto study, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Psychology, Zoology, Marine Biology, Pharmacology, Sports Science, Nursing and Midwifery. Students who wish to study Biological or Medical subjects at university will usually need to take A-Level Chemistry as well.

Extra curricular activities

Our extracurricular activity provision is tailored to match the interests of our learners. Our activities are wide ranging from field trips locally, nationally and abroad. Trips to universities are routinely arranged for students to witness biological research in action and to gain insights in to new technologies in the fields of genetics and biochemistry. Regular clubs in the past have included scientific journal club and science documentary club as well as a more hands on bird box construction, and bird monitoring programmes.
