About the course

The course will help you to develop many of the skills that are required by the creative industries. Modules on the course will prepare you for life in music environments, such as studio-based music production, live sound, composition, performance and (music) related entrepreneurial ventures.</p> <p>The key aims of the course are to develop a wide range of music production and performance skills, making use of technologies to compose, perform, record and produce original music. This will lead to a substantial portfolio of original work in performance, composition and production. Throughout the course you will develop your problem solving, listening and research skills, and in turn you can direct these entrepreneurial abilities towards a productive freelance future.</p> <p>As you progress you will have the opportunity to collaborate on projects with students across the creative courses of the School and with our industry partners. By the final stages of this degree you will be ready to undertake original research in a range of key areas including production, performance and composition.</p> <p>At the heart of this new course is a commitment to preparing you for work in areas such as studio-based music production, live sound, composition, performance and music-related entrepreneurial ventures. The course offers a vibrant, innovative and engaging curriculum that delivers work-ready graduates who will be equipped to compete in the national and international employment marketplace.

Years 1, 2 and 3 (delivered at Burnley College): The standard full time tuition fee rate for this course in 2023/24 for UK students is £9000 per year. The standard full time tuition fee for the Foundation year for this course in 2023/24 is £6000.

Entry Requirements

Given the practical, musical and technical demands of this course your entry will be subject to an audition/audition footage. If you do not meet the musical requirements for this programme, you will be advised to complete the foundation degree music programme first. Applicants will be expected to have a minimum equivalent of two A-levels at Grade C or a level 3 qualification at Merit level. Mature applicants without the above qualifications are also welcome to apply subject to a review of qualifications and relevant experiential learning.

The modules available on this course are as follows: YEAR 1 MODULES - Professional Performance Context, Music Composition, Introduction to Recording, Introduction to Pro Tools, Live Sound 1, Live Sound 2, Professional Performance Reflection, Performance Development. YEAR 2 MODULES - Professional Performance and Musicianship, Recording and Mixing Techniques, Industry Experience, Creative Audio Production, Live Sound: Consoles and Sound Systems, Live Sound: Networks and RF, Introduction to Research Methods, Professional Performance Practice, Professional Performance Application. YEAR 3 MODULES - Professional Performance Management, Production Production Project, Dissertation, Live Event Project, Professional Skills Audit.

Assessment

Creative projects, often assessed by a mixture of continuous assessment, documentation and final presentation. Essays and other coursework that tests your ability to investigate a topic and organise their material and ideas to a prescribed deadline. Extended dissertations, individual projects and portfolios as products of advanced understanding, knowledge, research skills and/or creative achievement. Reports on empirical work, which may take the form of fieldwork or laboratory experiments. Group and individual portfolios of written work and audio content that will include research, pre-production, production and post-production work submissions. Critical self-evaluation and role analysis in the form of individual reflective written evaluations. Peer evaluation in the form of discussion of work in groups.

Careers & Progression

On completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate a high level of competence in the use of music equipment and technology. Moreover you will have the intellectual curiosity and potential for continued artistic and creative development. These attributes will be demonstrated through your leadership, listening, critical reflection, teamwork, and organizational skills

Additional Details

Equipment Needed

Music students will be expected to bring their instrument and related musical equipment to practical sessions. Good quality, over-ear headphones are also essential. Access to your own computer with a DAW is not essential, it is beneficial.

Equipment Supplied

Practical elements of the course will be delivered at The Grand in Clitheroe using their Digico SD12 and Dnb Q-Series PA system. You will also have access to an Apple Mac suite rand a multi-function recording studio/practice rooms.

Extra curricular activities

Burnley College also has multiple gig and performance opportunities throughout the year. The College regularly hosts guest lecturers from industry professionals and organise trips to local recording studios and venues. Music students are supported in their own creative projects and ventures - many music students book additional recording studio time to or have extra-access to software and the resources to write, rehearse and produce their own music with the support of our skilled music technicians. Many students are involved in regular public performances throughout the year.

The cost of the course for UK students is £9000 per year. The standard full time tuition fee for the Foundation year for this course in 2020/21 is £6000.
