About the course

The course draws on subject areas including education, sociology, psychology, social policy and social work to give you a solid grounding for your future career.

You’ll examine the services, systems, policies and work practices that relate to children and young people in schools, with families, and in care settings.

Observational visits and work shadowing activities are combined with academic study. Integrating theory, policy and practice ensures you are well prepared for the workplace, you are also required to undertake placements with the following ages 0-1, 1-2 and 2-7 years.

Cost Information

Years 1 and 2 (delivered at Burnley College): The standard full time tuition fee rate for this course in 2023/24 for UK students is £9000 per year. Year 3 (delivered at UCLan): The standard full time tuition fee rate for this course in 2023/24 for UK students is £9250 per year. The standard full time tuition fee for the Foundation year for this course in 2023/24 is £6000.

Entry Requirements

Our typical offer is 96-112 UCAS Points. BTEC Extended Diploma: MMM-DMM GCSE: 5 at grade C/4 including Maths and English or equivalent Due to the interactions with children and vulnerable adults during this course, applicants are required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). You will be required to attend a face-to-face interview

Modules

Modules include: Year 1 (Burnley) - The Social Construction of Childhood Communication and Social Media Skills in Social Care Children’s Services and Systems 1 Development Across the Lifespan Learning for Work in Children’s Services: Introduction Transitions in Children and Young People's Lives Year 2 (Burnley) Researching with Children and Young People Children’s Services and Systems 2 Safeguarding Children and Young People Diversity and Inclusive Practice with Children and Adults Learning for work in Children’s Services-Consolidation and Continuing Development Year 3 (Preston) A Dissertation Children’s Services and Systems 3 (Multi professional Working in Children’s Services) International Perspectives on Children’s Lives Learning From Work in Children’s Services Students are also required to select two optional modules.

Assessment

The key learning outcomes for this Degree are assessed through a variety of methods including essays, content analysis, portfolio, poster presentations and workbooks. A research proposal and final-year dissertation are also part of the assessment.

Careers & Progression

Graduates from this programme can progress to careers in a range of settings across the spectrum of the Children and Young People’s Workforce including children’s centres, schools, national charities, nurseries and family and community support. There is also the opportunity to go on to obtain professional status in Teaching, Social Work and Early Years or progression to external teacher training courses relating to primary and secondary school teaching.
