About the course

Art and Design: Graphic Communication is a practical choice which will challenge students; image making skills, inventiveness and research ability. This inspiring course is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with two and three dimensional art forms and have passion for art and communication. A Level Graphic Communication combines both theoretical and practical work . Throughout this inspiring course the emphasis will be placed on developing students’ research skills, creativity and contextual understanding; broadening their appreciation of Graphic Communication. A Level Graphic Communication is an exciting and dynamic course for anyone with artistic aptitude and determination to explore their creative boundaries. The course provides an imaginative grounding in the creative processes and techniques found within visual communication. You will explore digital and analogue technologies, working in a variety of media, becoming proficient with industry standard Adobe software whilst working on state of the art iMac computers. Strands found within graphic communication include Illustration and animation as well as branding and advertising. You will generate a portfolio of evidence, where research and creative developments will be recorded. The course will culminate in the production of a graphically design outcome(s) created in response to a set brief.

Entry Requirements

At least six GCSEs at grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects, including both English and Mathematics. Additional entry requirements for this course are: A minimum of grade 6 in GCSE Art and Design and/ or Graphic Design. Please note GCSE Design Technology: Resistant Materials/Graphic Products will not be considered as a GCSE in 'Graphic Design'. In exceptional circumstances, we will consider students without the sufficient GCSEs who have a strong portfolio of design work demonstrating genuine interest and capability in the area.

Assessment

You will be assessed against the course requirements as dictated by OCR specifications. This is by continual assessment with the summary assessment on the successful completion of the two year study programme, completing the personal investigations and exam requirements. You are assessed on the complexity and depth of your understanding of materials, techniques and processes as well as your own innovative concepts as presented in both your final piece and sketchbook explorations.

Careers & Progression

On successful completion of this course you will have the opportunity to progress onto a wide range of degree courses at university; these may include Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Advertising or Media related.

Extra curricular activities

There are plenty of activities and visits to take part in that will help you achieve your ambitions. Past visits have included: Gallery visits to London, Liverpool, Manchester, The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Harrogate Knit and Stitch, Platform Gallery Clitheroe. There are also opportunities to go on residential trips, recent locations include Paris, Rome and London. You will also benefit from a wide range of guest speakers to enrich the curriculum.
