Imagine spending just one week transforming raw ideas into a professional 15-minute performance. That is exactly the challenge our HNC and HND Performing Arts students embraced during an intensive residency with the acclaimed Coalesce Dance Theatre.
From tentative initial steps exploring solo and duet movements to a cohesive, powerful ensemble piece, the journey was nothing short of transformative.
This unique project pushed our students to explore new depths of creativity and resilience, offering them a tangible taste of life in the professional dance industry.
The project began with simple explorations but quickly evolved into something profound. Under the guidance of industry professional Janice Ho, students delved into complex themes, translating abstract concepts into physical expression.
Company Dancer Janice was instrumental in guiding the students through this creative process. She explained the artistic vision behind the piece:
“We’ve been looking at the theme of waves and the cycle of life – how you can go from a high to a low point very quickly. A lot of the movement we created was based on collaboration and supporting each other through those highs and lows.”
This focus on mutual support wasn’t just thematic; it became the backbone of the week. Students learned that professional dance is rarely a solo endeavour but a collective effort where trust is paramount.
For our tutors, watching the students evolve over the week is always a highlight. BCUC Tutor Harriet Whittaker noted the significant personal and professional growth demonstrated by the group. Harriet said:
“The students have shown incredible resilience this week. They have had to adapt quickly, work intensively and push their creative boundaries. Seeing them grow in confidence and capability in such a short space of time is exactly why we champion these industry collaborations.”
The true measure of this project’s success lies in the experience of the students. For many, it was an opportunity to confront challenges head-on.
HND Performing Arts student Megan Slater reflected on the intensity of the process: “It was challenging at first, trying to create so much material in a short time, but working with Coalesce pushed me to try new things. I’ve learned that I can adapt faster than I thought.”
HNC Performing Arts student Annaliese Robinson found the professional environment inspiring. “Stepping out of my comfort zone was scary, but the support from everyone made it easier. It felt like a real company environment and that has made me more excited about my future career.”
Projects like this are at the heart of the Burnley College University Courses experience. We believe that ‘What If’ shouldn’t just be a question – it should be an invitation to explore your potential. By connecting students with industry leaders like Coalesce Dance Theatre, we ensure they leave us with a qualification and the professional resilience and creative toolkit needed to succeed.
