At Burnley College, sustainability is part of our identity. Through transparent reporting, strong partnerships and empowering initiatives for students and staff, we’re driving meaningful change.
Every year, our robust Sustainability Statement highlights achievements and areas for improvement in key metrics such as energy, water, waste, transport and sustainable food. See our latest report here: Sustainability-Statement-March-25.pdf
By carefully establishing clear baselines for our key sustainability indicators, we’ve set ambitious targets to ensure we’re continually improving. These targets reflect our commitment to meaningful environmental progress and align with our long-term mission to reach net-zero emissions.
From our energy-saving strategies to ethical procurement policies, green values guide our decisions. Locally, we work closely with businesses. The Burnley Climate Change Group helps us network with other organisations, promoting community-driven sustainability and inspiring collaboration during events like Burnley Climate Week.
Our students are catalysts for change. Through initiatives like COP (the annual meeting of nations to advance global action to tackle climate change) and partnerships with industry leaders such as Safran Nacelles, learners take on real-world challenges, bringing fresh ideas to the table.
We’ve outlined clear objectives to achieve net-zero emissions:
Scope 1 and 2 emissions: These include direct activities we can control, such as waste management and on-campus fuel use. We’re committed to achieving net-zero in these areas by 2040.
Scope 3 emissions: These relate to indirect impacts, like supply chain activities and third-party emissions. Our goal is to reach net-zero in this area by 2050.
At Burnley College, we see sustainability as an opportunity to lead, innovate and inspire. By clearly sharing our successes with students, staff and the wider community, we’re turning bold goals into impactful action.
