Themis welcomed 15 members of the Hunan Institute of Engineering in China to Burnley College to explore our award-winning construction & engineering facilities.
The delegates heard how Burnley College’s community partnerships and outreach initiatives such as BC Programmes and the Project SEARCH internship provide valuable opportunities for local engineering talent to unlock their potential from from Head of Apprenticeships Megan Salkeld and Themis Operations Manager Jessica Parkinson.
Solomon Whittaker, Deputy Head of Construction & Engineering, introduced the guests to award-winning degree apprentice Amber Baber.
Amber’s technical expertise and dedication throughout her apprenticeship journey saw her win the Manufacturing and Engineering accolade at Themis Inspire & Achieve Awards 2025. Amber’s inspirational story is testament to the power of advanced apprenticeships.
She shared:
“My degree apprenticeship has given me a head start: I’m now finishing my degree with university-level knowledge in my specialism and over three years’ industry experience.”
The session also set out a roadmap for the exciting opportunities that devolved funding is providing for adult skills development in Burnley.
From pre-employment advice and guidance to digital skills workshops, Themis and Burnley College are ensuring that the next generation are able to meet local businesses’ needs – a model that the members of the Hunan Institute of Engineering present were eager to take back to China and use to empower their own communities.
