About the course
The Access to HE Diploma in Art and Design is designed to prepare learners for study at university level, particularly for degrees in art, design, and creative disciplines. The course develops the academic knowledge, practical skills, and research abilities needed for successful progression to higher education.
Learners will explore a wide range of key themes, including:
Core Art and Design Studies – Cultural Studies: Modern and Contemporary Studies in Art and Design, The Design Process, and Visual Studies 2D.
Research and Independent Study – Completion of a research project in an area of personal interest relevant to Art and Design.
Optional Art and Design Units – A variety of creative units to suit individual interests, including 3D Design and Production, Graphic Design, Photography, Printmaking, Studies of the Human Figure, Textile Printing and Colouring, Typography, and Using Mixed Media.
Supporting Skills for Study and Work – Mandatory and optional ungraded units that develop essential skills for academic study and professional practice in the creative sector.

Applicants must hold GCSE or Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English at the point of enrolment. Information About Fees
If you are aged 19 or over, you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees.
You don’t start repaying the loan until you earn over £27,295 per year (current threshold).
If you progress to university and successfully complete your degree, your Advanced Learner Loan for this Access course is written off in full.
This means you could study completely free, depending on your progression.
