About the course
This foundation degree in Furniture Design and Make has been developed by Burnley College University Courses and The University of Lancashire. It is linked closely with the furniture industry and aims to inspire creativity in design and excellence in craftsmanship through work related study. Situated in the Burnley College Wood crafts centre of excellence Centre, our students develop skills as creative thinkers and makers who innovate furniture craft through the exploration of materials and skills. This programme balances design, craft and theory to nurture furniture designers and makers of excellent ability.
At Burnley College University Courses Centre, within the award‑winning Wood Craft Centre of Excellence, your first year is designed to immerse you in the fundamentals of furniture design and making. You’ll gain hands‑on experience across a wide spectrum of practical skills and crafts, supported by theoretical study.
- Develop your graphic communication and visual language skills through CAD programmes and case studies.
- Learn essential craft techniques, from traditional hand processes to modern machine operations.
- Progress towards understanding manufacturing methods, including batch production.
- Explore the theoretical issues surrounding manufacturing practices and material culture, giving you a deeper appreciation of the industry context.

Entry Requirements
A levels in appropriate subjects plus 4 GCSE including Maths and English at grade 4 or above
BTEC National Diploma in Furniture Studies or;
BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design or;
GNVQ Art and Design or;
NVQ Level 3 Furniture Studies or;
City and Guilds Advances Furniture Studies or;
Demonstrable relevant experience and commitment demonstrated through interview.

Assessment
