About the course

A Level Further Mathematics builds on the skills, knowledge and understanding set out in the whole GCSE subject content for mathematics and the subject content for A Level Mathematics. The main focus is Pure Mathematics; looking further at algebra, calculus and numerical methods and introducing new concepts such as hyperbolic functions, matrices, complex numbers, and polar coordinates. In addition, students will study two areas of Applied Mathematics from a choice of Statistics, Mechanics and Decision Maths. Problem-solving, proof and mathematical modelling will be assessed in the context of the wider knowledge which students taking A level Further Mathematics will have studied. Students must apply for A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics plus two other A Level subjects. Students will complete A Level Mathematics in their first year, sitting the examinations at the end of year 1 in preparation for studying Further Mathematics in their second year.

Extra curricular activities

There is an opportunity to participate in the UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge (SMC) each year. This is an intriguing multiple choice question paper designed to stimulate mathematical problem-solving skills. Tens of thousands of students across the UK take part each year. We also send a team of four students to a regional final of the UKMT Senior Team Challenge at Lancaster University. This challenge promotes mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills, competing against students from other schools and colleges in the North West. Students can also choose to research Mathematics via the CREST award. Trips to universities to look at problem-solving and maths in context further enhance the course.
