About the course

In our modern data-rich world, statistical literacy is becoming increasingly important in further and higher education and employment. This course will help students develop the skills of statistical enquiry and practise the underpinning statistical calculations and interpretation using real-world data and authentic contexts. A Level Statistics might appeal if you are seeking to pursue the study of a numerate post-16 subject, but not wishing to study pure mathematics. You can, however, study both A Level Maths and A Level Statistics at the same time. It goes well with subjects such as A level Biology, Psychology, Geography, Business Studies and Economics. The emphasis is on using and applying statistics; interpreting statistical information and results in context and critically assessing the reliability and validity of statistical methodologies will also be required.

Entry Requirements

At least six GCSEs at grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects, including both English and Mathematics. Additional entry requirements for this course: at least grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics Higher Tier.

Assessment

A Level Statistics consists of three externally-examined papers at the end of Year 2. These are of equal size and weighting: one paper assessing data and probability, another on statistical inference, and a third paper assessing the specification as a whole. Calculators with necessary statistical functions are required for all examinations. Throughout the course, we will assess you using formal examinations and mini-tests. At the end of Year 1, you will sit internally-assessed examinations to check your progress. From summer 2021 onwards, there will be no AS level examinations for this subject.

Careers & Progression

Statisticians use mathematical techniques to analyse and interpret data and draw conclusions. They work with the data that is all around us and the opportunities for work are vast. Some of the jobs making heavy use of statistics include Actuary, Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Investment Analyst, Medical Statistician, Sports Statistician and Statistical Consultant.
