About the course

This work-based learning programme combines courses in health, social care and mental health and is aimed at meeting the skills required by the growing health and social care market. The course aims to equip you if you are working, or intending to work in health and social care with relevant knowlege and skills, to address your continuing professional development needs and to bridge the gap between theory and practice. During the course you will also undertake two practice placement modules in which will enable you to develop a range of workbased skills. This programme can lead to a wide variety of other courses and studies, incuding Social Work, Community and Social Care, Nursing, Midwifery, Phsiotherapy, Operating Department Practice and Sports Therapy.

Entry requirements

Our typical offer is 104-112 UCAS Points. BTEC Extended Diploma: Merit, Pass, Pass Access to Higher Education Diploma: 72 - 80 points GCSE: 5 at grade C/4 including Maths & English or equivalent All students must be prepared to undergo and prove they have an enhanced DBS suitable to work with vulnerable adults and children. This incurs an additional cost. You will also be required to attend a face to face interview for the course.

Assessment

Health and Social Care tutors promote the transfer of learning between academic theory and work based learning. Teaching and learning methods are varied including individual study, lectures, group activities, speakers and on line learning. Work-based learning is integral to the course aims, enabling the evaluation of skills and knowledge in practice. Assessment methods are varied and include presentations, essays, workbooks, portfolio and reflective accounts.

Careers & Progression

By completing Year 1 of this programme, you will have the option to apply for the BSc (Hons) Pre-registration Nursing, BSc (Hons) Midwifery, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy and BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice with the University of Central Lancashire. Successful completion of the two-year programme at Burnley College will allow you to gain access to the third year of the BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care and the BA (Hons) Applied Community & Social Care Studies. Please note there is no guarantee of progression onto these programmes.
