Burnley College Students Set for the Adventure of a Lifetime in South Africa

A team of intrepid Uniformed Public Services and Sport students are set to take on the adventure of a lifetime to South Africa this summer.

The trip, as part of a series of global enrichment opportunities run by the college in collaboration with RiSE International, will see 11 spirited learners complete work experience supporting schools in Gqeberha.

They will also have the chance to immerse themselves in the local culture by enjoying sightseeing and getting up close and personal with regional wildlife.

The students will be delivering multi-skills sports sessions and literacy support to partner schools via United Through Support, as well as providing clothing and new sports equipment.

They have set an ambitious target of raising £5,000, with plans to use the funds to create a lasting legacy in Gqeberha by helping create safe, inspiring education and leisure spaces that will serve the local community for years to come.

Fundraising efforts have already begun, with the Burnley to South Africa: Miles with Meaning challenge taking centre stage. The team will be walking, running and cycling over 6,000 miles in the lead up to their trip – the equivalent of the impressive distance between Burnley College and their destination.

Staff and students will also enjoy a friendly face off in a gruelling fitness competition, with all of the money raised supporting their mission.

Steve Garstang, Lecturer in Uniformed Public Services at Burnley College, says that the team are raring to go:

“This is an enthusiastic, highly motivated group of students who I’m sure will do us proud. They’re more than ready to face the fundraising challenges we’ve got planned and are looking forward to making a difference with their work in South Africa.

“This trip is so much more than simply an educational journey; it’s a chance for these students to step outside of their comfort zone and experience an unparalleled opportunity to explore just how far their skills can take them.”

Upcoming trips for Burnley College students this year also include placements in Prague for Business students, Crete for Travel & Tourism students and Valencia for Media, Childcare and Health & Social Care learners.

RiSE International is a social enterprise organisation that works with further education providers to offer meaningful international work placements that empower young people to expand their horizons and discover new career aspirations.
