Burnley College collaborated with two distinguished manufacturers to host Industry Day – designed to inspire and ignite passion in an eager group of future Engineers.
It’s the third year for this innovative event which saw more than 40 Year 9 Students from Burnley High, Blessed Trinity RC College and Sir John Thursby Community College take part.
The students spent the morning having their interest sparked by visiting the employers of FDM Digital Solutions, Velocity Composites and BCW. The young enthusiasts also learnt more about how the companies operate and took the controls of various high-tech machines.
The employers highlighted the variety of jobs available within their sectors and explained the progression opportunities too.
In the afternoon, the pupils visited Burnley College’s cutting-edge campus to take part in a dynamic and varied range of exciting activities in our state-of-the-art Engineering department.
Our dedicated staff provided the opportunity for the students to explore the pioneering, cutting-edge manufacturing and engineering equipment our learners have access to.
The young pupils were amazed by enthralling live demonstrations and participated in Robotics activities. They were encouraged to ‘Beat the Buzzer’ and enhanced their problem-solving skills by successfully completing puzzle activities.
Burnley College provided the opportunity for the budding Engineers to practise their milling and turning techniques on our five-axis CNC machines as well as designing a donut using industry standard CAD software.

He says it’s was fantastic to see so many budding young engineers:
“The engagement from the schools was exceptional especially from the young students who really threw themselves into it.
“The day provided a real insight into what young people are looking for in engineering and how we can support them with the training they need to succeed.”
The Year 9s were also introduced to the exciting post-16 technical pathways available at Burnley College.
