A talented team of Burnley College Dance students wowed audiences at internationally acclaimed performing arts venue Sadler’s Wells at this year’s Making Moves National Platform.
We were one of just eight schools and youth groups from across England specially selected to perform on the Sadler’s Wells East stage as part of the venue’s annual youth dance festival.
Our learners warmed up for their big moment by enjoying a creative workshop with Olivier Award-winning director, choreographer and educator Fin Walker to develop their final piece, titled Out of Line.
Fin shared their thoughts on how well the students worked:
“I was thrilled with how well each of the dancers engaged with the activities in the workshop.
“They were all so willing to step outside of their comfort zones to try something new, which is very impressive.”
Inspired by real experiences of dress codes, mobile phone bans, bag checks and pat-downs, Out of Line explores young people’s experiences of control, conformity and rebellion within school. The dancers worked closely with professional technical crews to bring their creative vision to life.
Samantha Allen, Curriculum Manager in Creative Arts at Burnley College, praised the dancers’ tenacity and team spirit:
“We are unbelievably proud, this is such an incredible achievement for our learners.
“Working with Fin Walker has been so inspiring and has given them an invaluable opportunity to explore their creativity in a professional setting and develop as artists.
“There has been a really supportive atmosphere among all of the dancers throughout the process that is lovely to see.
“Our learners represented Burnley College – and the North West – in the best way possible!”
The Making Moves National Platform is in its third year and has already been met with industry press acclaim, celebrating its purpose in demonstrating why youth arts provision matters and offering a vital platform for the next generation to be seen and heard.
