Budding Carpenter Takes Bronze at the Go Construct SkillBuild National Finals

A talented Burnley College University Courses student is celebrating achieving an incredible third place finish in the Furniture & Cabinet-Making category at the Go Construct SkillBuild National Finals.

Despite facing tough competition, Ali-Raza Gilani, 20, from Nelson and a former student at Marsden Heights Community College, demonstrated exceptional technical ability, creativity and precision to secure a podium place, as one of 80 competitors testing their mettle during this prestigious event.

Ali-Raza recently completed a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Furniture: Design and Make, progressing on to a BA (Hons) degree in Interior Design with BCUC. He said:

“Competing at SkillBuild was an incredible experience that really pushed me to produce work at an elite level.

“The mentorship I received from my tutors at Burnley College, and the skills I developed during my HND, gave me the resilience I needed to perform under pressure.

“This opportunity has motivated me to keep perfecting my skills and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

Sol Whittaker, Deputy Head of Construction & Engineering, added:

“We’re immensely proud of what Ali-Raza has achieved. His dedication to maintaining high standards of craftsmanship is admirable and his final result in the competition is a well-deserved testament to his talent and potential to succeed in this industry.”

SkillBuild, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices. The finals were held at Arena MK in Milton Keynes.

We’re proud to support the next generation of skill and talent that is built to last by nurturing students with the competence and confidence to compete at a national level. We are also proud hosts of SkillBuild’s regional heats in our impressive, industry-standard facilities.
