What is an Advanced Learner Loan?

An Advanced Learner Loan is a Government backed scheme designed to assist adults aged 19 and over pay for eligible courses which can include A-Levels, Vocational and further education courses.

The loan is an amount of money which can be put towards the cost of your course, making it easier for learners who want to gain new skills, get new qualifications, increase their chances of promotion or perhaps complete what they started at school many years ago.

It means you can concentrate on learning without worrying about upfront costs.

Why Are Advanced Learner Loans So Useful For Returning Learners?

• You don’t need to pay anything upfront

• The money is paid directly to the education provider, so you don’t have to stress

• Repayments only start once you’re earning above £25,000 per year

• It is flexible and designed specifically for adult learners

• Checking your eligibility is straight forward; you must be 19 years old, a UK national and studying an eligible course at an approved training provider in England

• You can apply for up to four loans and you can get more than one at the same time, although some restrictions do apply

• If you study an Access to Higher Education Diploma, Student Finance England will write off your Advanced Learner Loan once you have completed an eligible university course.

To apply, check with your training provider if the course qualifies and ask them for a ‘Learning and Funding Information’ letter. You will need this to complete the application.

You will usually get a letter confirming your loan within two weeks and you can enjoy your education without worrying about your finances.
