A remarkable A Level student who excelled in her A Level studies has been recognised by the Association of Colleges.
Dorothea Davies, who studied A Level Mathematics, Environmental Science, History and Politics, has been named as a finalist in the Young Student of the Year category.
From founding a not-for-profit organisation, Game to Gain which provides affordable tutoring for the 11+ entrance exam to over 300 learners in her local area, Dorothea’s accomplishments are astounding.
She has also collaborated with Bacup Swimming Club to launch a Junior Lifeguard programme, displaying inspirational leadership in her community.
Iain McGhie, Head of A Levels said this recognition is extremely well deserved:
“Dorothea has been able to maintain a successful acting career, shown a long-standing commitment to fundraising and volunteering work and committed to community projects, all while maintaining outstanding academic performance.
“Her greatest strength is her ability to positively impact and inspire those around her, which she has done throughout her time at Burnley College. Dorothea is a truly inspirational young person.”
Throughout high school, she took on the responsibilities of School Councillor, Librarian and was also a member of the Student Executive Board. Internationally, Dorothea has served as the North England Representative for UN Girls and Politics, represented East Lancashire at the World Scout Jamboree in Korea, and is currently a member of the Future Leaders UK programme.
Award nominations are not new to Dorothea. She has previously collected the Safran Sustainability Award, celebrating her contributions and commitment to sustainability and climate innovation.
Alongside this, she was previously named as the Young Person of the Year at the Bacup Business Awards in 2024, came second for the Enterprising Person of the Year and was a finalist for the Workforce Development and Part-Time Business at the Rossendale Business Awards in 2023.
Dorothea, who has since been awarded a scholarship at The University of St Andrew’s said:
“I am really surprised and grateful to have been chosen for this. The nomination makes me think about all the role models I have benefited from that have inspired and motivated me to try and make a difference.”
She added Burnley College has helped her excel and stated that her experience here has prepared her well for what lies ahead:
“Burnley College has given me the best educational experience of my life; the coaching, support and leadership from all of my lecturers and the management team have been incredible. The college takes people from all walks of life and gives them the support they need to thrive.”
The winners will be announced at the AoC Annual Conference Dinner on Tuesday 10 November. We wish Dorothea all the best on this extremely well-deserved recognition.
