About the course

Why Criminology? Ever found yourself asking the following… What is crime? And, why do people commit crime? If you have, then Criminology is the course for you. On the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Criminology you will study a range of topics from the different types of crime, how the media impacts upon public perceptions of crime, what happens in the process from crime scene to court room and how offenders are punished and why we punish. You will study 4 units, 2 of which will be internally assessed and 2 will be externally assessed. This course is great for those wanting to go and study in the criminal justice system and also the legal system. For example, you could go into police, probation, The course taps into sociological and psychological theories as well as delving into the effectiveness of the legal system. So this course is commonly studied alongside Sociology, Psychology and Law however if you have an interest in crime and the processes behind it- this could be the course for you!

5 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above

Assessment

You will be assessed twice internally. Units 1 and 3 are both internal assessments where students will sit a set task with the allowances of certain materials to help them. These assessments will be split over more than one day and usually last 8 hours. Unit 2 and 4 are externally assessed and are more of a traditional exam.

Extra curricular activities

Extra-curricular activities include guest speakers from universities as well as professionals within the criminological field. Also- Behind Bars conference is held to give students to meet real-life reformed criminals and hear about their experiences for the day.
