Serat Fatima, 19, from Burnley, a former student at Sir John Thursby Community College, was one of our inspirational award winners at this year’s Awards for Excellence ceremony.

She achieved her Advanced Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years) and, in February 2024, placed first overall in our Early Years Skills Competition having showed off her excellent teamwork, creativity and presentation skills to industry expert judges.

Serat also thrived during her work placement in a local school:

“I really enjoyed guiding children in making the tricky transition from nursery to primary school, as well as learning more about how to successfully lead forest school sessions.” 

Inspired by her supportive tutors, Serat has set her sights on a future career as a primary school teacher and has progressed to a Foundation Degree in Children, Young People and their Services with BCUC.
