There is an exciting new opportunity for a Maintenance Apprentice to be trained and developed into a Toolmaker/Maintenance Engineer at United Springs Ltd at their site in Rochdale.

Work with a small team within the Engineering Department to help in of all aspects of creating parts and to help with a smooth running of the departments. Using a wide range of skills and techniques gained through college and onsite development.

Duties/main responsibilties include:

The role of the Toolmaker/Engineer Apprentice is to learn from experienced toolmakers the knowledge and skills required to make tooling and carry out repairs on machines and equipment throughout the factory to ensure that production is kept to an optimum. The role will also involve engineering projects to improve processes and fix problems that may have arisen in production. This is the start of a career in Engineering and as a company we do train and develop our employees. Once an employee has finished their 4 year apprenticeship they may be able to continue to do HNC Mechanical Engineering for further development and experience.

The main functions for the apprentice on a day to day basis throughout their apprenticeship is shown below. This does not cover every aspect but shows an outline of what the job entails.

  • To learn how to set up and use various machines such as CNC Machines, Lathes and other equipment to manufacture different tools.
  • Learn about different types of raw materials
  • Learn how to read technical drawings and manufacture the component to the drawing requirements
  • Learn about heat treatment processes
  • Gain knowledge in quality requirements and the need to make a component right first time
  • Be part of a team doing various operations and projects to ensure the components are made on time and to the standard they are required. Also, to ensure the fixtures and fittings in the factory are services and kept in good working order.
